From 1956 to 1964, during the presidencies of Carlos P. Garcia and Diosdado Macapagal, Tagaytay sought to promote a new image as the top tourist city, building a 13- hectare picnic location, called Picnic Grove. However, the Picnic Grove was soon abandoned. From 1970 to 1975, wealthy families in Manila started to build their weekend residences along the ridge. Hence, the Picnic Grove was cleaned and refurbished.
On December 22, 1980, the City Government of Tagaytay turned over the management of Picnic Grove to the National Government, through the Department of Tourism and HSDC/SICOR/PTA.
On December 23, 2005, the Department of Tourism turned over the management of Picnic Grove back to Tagaytay’s City Government after 25 years of managing it.
The Picnic Grove is open daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Families and friends who are up for a picnic bonding in Tagaytay can use the cottages along the grove’s slope. Besides having a picnic and enjoying a barbeque party, visitors can also enjoy various recreational activities like horseback riding, zipline, and cable rides.
The grove also has an extensive grassland, which visitors can use as an area for kite flying or resting on the grass. In case local and tourists are up for an adventure, Picnic Grove also offers a 390-meter long eco-trail. Visitors can explore the boardwalks and bridges of the nature trail and enjoy the city’s refreshing breeze.
Getting to Picnic Grove by private or public vehicles would be easy as it is only along Tagaytay – Calamba Road. Using a private car, visitors can travel straight to the stretch of Tagaytay – Calamba Road. Picnic Grove is near Tierra de Maria Church on the right side of the road.
On the other hand, people can commute to Picnic Grove by riding a jeepney bound for or with a “People’s Park” sign from Olivarez Jeepney Terminal and alight at Picnic Grove.
