Tagaytay City is known to be a go-to destination for most locals and tourists who loves views and sceneries. People’s Park in the Sky is one of the famous go-to spots for sightseeing in the city as it has a fantastic location that allows people to have a broader look at the Taal Volcano and the ridges of Tagaytay. People’s Park sits at the top of Mount Sungay, also known as Mount Gonzales, which is the highest point in Cavite with a height of 2,326 feet (or 709 meters) above sea level. Hence, offering visitors a breathtaking view of its surrounding areas. Although the Park has minimal activities to offer as visitors would most likely be walking and sightseeing, many people still choose to visit the tourist spot. They are intrigued by the spectacular view it provides to visitors.
The People’s Park was initially called Palace in the Sky. At the site is an unfinished and seemingly abandoned mansion commissioned by former First Lady Imelda Marcos in the 1980s. The mansion was supposed to accommodate former United States President Ronald Reagan, who announced his plan to visit the country. However, the planned visit was cancelled; hence, the construction was stopped, and eventually, the mansion was abandoned. In due time, the mansion was converted into an urban park and called People’s Park in the Sky. The incomplete scaffolding of the mansion remained intact, which is enjoyed by the public until now.
Aside from the mansion sitting at the top of Mount Sungay, tourists can also visit the Shrine of Our Lady, Mother of Fair Love. Hernan D. Reyes was the man behind the installation of the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the child Jesus in 1974. Consequently, people can also see the Doppler Radar station of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), which was built beside the mansion. It is one of the Doppler radar systems placed across the Philippines in 2010 to measure the amount of rainfall and observe weather patterns accurately.
Like any other tourist spots, People’s Park in the Sky is accessible by private or public vehicles. If visitors are going to the People’s Park by private vehicle:
1. From Makati, take the SLEX and exit to Sta Rosa.
2. Drive along the Nuvali Boulevard, going to Sta. Rosa Tagaytay Road.
3. Continue straight, then turn left to Tagaytay – Calamba Road. People’s Park is located on top of Mt. Sungay.
On the other hand, if people will be using public utility vehicles:
1. From the Ayala triangle, ride a bus bound to Tagaytay and alight at Olivarez Plaza.
2. Ride a tricycle going to People’s Park.
3. Or, if visitors are coming from the Picnic Grove, they can ride a van going to People’s Park.
